Electricians in Sacramento Answer Your AMP Service Questions
I hear a lot of questions regarding AMP services and Sacramento electrical work in the local areas. I’d like to take the time to address the most frequently asked questions here and hopefully make your life easier along the way.
What size AMP service should I get for my home?
The most commonly used AMP service sizes in your home are 100 and 200 amps. If you generally don’t consume much energy and don’t have/use any of the following: electric heat, hot water tank, dryer or central AC, then your home will be fine with the 100 AMP unit. However, keep in mind that the 100 AMP unit is the minimum size allowed by the National Electrical Code, so if you’re starting this small you live little room for expansion if you have an increase in energy load later.
The 200 AMP service is a little more expensive, usually around 30 percent, but if you have a higher electricity load then this is probably going to be your starting point. If your electricity load increases from your current point then you will be in good shape, as the 200 AMP service is bigger and allows room for expansion.
Keep in mind however that getting a larger AMP service will not give you “better” electricity. For example, if you’re only using enough electricity for a 100 AMP, then getting a 200 AMP service will not give you better electricity. All of the electrical loads are the same. The only difference is the maximum amount of electricity that is let into your home.
If you’re interested in increasing your load on your AMP service you must also check your meter socket. If it can handle the increased load then you’re in the clear, but if not this is going to be an extra item that will have to be replaced. Also, if it were showing sings of wear or damage it would be a good idea to replace. It’s also important to remember to consult with a Sacramento electrical professional or your go to electricians in Sacramento before doing any electrical work yourself.
So, how can I calculate my energy load to see if current service will be enough?
The quick and easy way is to use this online electricity calculator. All you need to do is plug in a few numbers and you’ll have a rough estimate of you home’s energy load.
If you live in an older home, then it’s possible your AMP service is below 100 AMPS, but if you want to upgrade then, the lowest you’ll be able to go is 100 AMPS, because this is the smallest allowable service.
A lot of times if you have primarily gas devices, your energy load may be lower than you expect. So, that’s important to keep in mind when making your calculations, if you get a number that seems very low.
I hope this covered a few of your basic AMP service questions and will allow you to do some of your own calculations if you wish!
